Forty-seven players broke par and 73 shot par or better on Day 1, leading our Dave Shedloski to label the course as Royal St. Gettable. Softer fairways and greens took some of the usual fire out of this links layout. We’ll see if Royal St. George’s fights back on Friday.

The morning wave on Day 2 includes players like Rory McIlroy, who birdied his final hole to cap off an up-and-down round, will have a chance to make a move (he starts at even par, teeing off at 5:20 a.m., eastern). Collin Morikawa, making his debut at The Open, shot a sterling three-under 67 and sits three back of the lead (3:25 a.m., eastern). Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson and Patrick Reed are among the world’s best teeing it up Friday morning.
We recap the latest from Day 2 below.
4:05 a.m.: Now we’re live! Morikawa makes pars at the second and third to stay at four under, while Ben Herbert, who turned in a first-round 66, bogeys the first. Still, conditions seem tame at the moment, given yesterday’s afternoon wave a chance to make a move.
3:57 a.m.: Good morning from the Open! Well, good morning to all those watching the Open. Collin Morikawa birdied the first to move to four under for the event, with Frankie Molinari making an early move as well. But Golf Channel is still showing “Tommy’s Honour” so we’ll check back once the actual golf comes on.
